Entering the health care field as a transcriptionist doesn’t always require medical transcription training, as you may be able to learn on-the-job. However, more and more health care employers are seeking out applicants who have completed medical transcription training and certification. If they can’t find applicants who have completed medical transcription training, they may choose to outsource the job overseas instead to a more affordable worker.
Medical transcription training and certification makes you a more attractive applicant for a medical transcriptionist position because there is more to the job than simply typing dictations. Medical transcription training can help you develop the skills you’ll need to successfully work the job, including, but not limited to, a basic knowledge of medical terms, writing skills, editorial skills, and use of transcription tools.
Applicants who have completed medical transcription training know how to write correctly and effectively and they know when to use their judgment to edit and clarify dictations when necessary. Medical transcription training helps them recognize basic medical terms and procedures so that the transcriptionists know what they’re writing about and can make a report accurately. Completing a certification exam by a reputable organization such as the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) further demonstrates that you’re qualified and capable to handle the job.
Medical transcription training usually takes place over one to two years and is available at many colleges, universities, and technical schools. Aside from daytime and full-time medical transcription training programs, you may be able to enroll part-time and attend classes in the evening or online so that you can keep your current job as you work toward your new career goal with medical transcription training.
Once you’ve completed a medical transcription training program, you can sign up for an exam such as those offered by the AHDI in order to receive certification, such as the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) or the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) position. These one-time, four-hour exams cost only $120 to $200 to apply and can result in greater wages and opportunities for you following medical transcription training.
